Role-play | Can an English-only, zero-background student learn it all?
Walking through this Obsidian vault and the offline site as a Form 3 student who reads only English and has never coded, recording what works, where I get stuck, and what is missing.
Role-play | Can an English-only, zero-background student learn it all?
Form 3 (Grade 9) student. I read and listen to English well; I can't read Chinese.
Zero coding background: I have never written Python.
Maths up to quadratic equations; no derivatives, matrices or logarithms yet.
A computer and internet; I can use Kaggle's free GPU.
This differs from the persona in 03_English_F3_Student, who already "knows basic Python (variables, for loops, lists)".
What I can use
Material
Usable?
Official videos with human-made English captions
✅ The biggest advantage I have
Offline site in "EN" mode, the book, Kaggle notebooks, forums
✅ All English
03_English_F3_Student (peer answers, cards)
✅
08_Python基礎 (bilingual)
✅ Every explanation has an English line
09 role-play reports
✅ This file
01_課程筆記 (lesson notes, key terms, exercises)
❌ Chinese only
06_學習路線 (study route), 07_影片導讀 (video guide)
❌ Chinese only
04_關聯圖 (concept maps)
❌ Labels in Chinese
00_課程總覽 (course overview)
❌ Mostly Chinese
Lesson by lesson
Ratings: ✅ I can learn it with what's here ⚠️ I get the gist but need extra help ❌ I can't learn it from these materials
Step 0 | Python and tools
Before: the course assumes about a year of coding. The first cell, !pip install -Uqq fastai, means nothing to me. ❌
Now: Python You Need for fast.ai topics 0 to 10 have English explanations, examples and exercises. About 3 to 4 weeks at an hour a day. ✅
Kaggle sign-up and GPU settings are in English, so I can follow them, but there are no screenshots in the vault. ⚠️
Part 1
Lesson
What I learn
Where I get stuck
Rating
L01 Getting started
Images are numbers; five steps to a classifier; pretrained models
Video and captions are clear. The Chinese video guide (chapter list, must-watch filter) isn't available to me, so I watch all 83 minutes
✅
L02 Deployment
Turning a model into a web app
git, terminal, VS Code, Hugging Face: English, but many new tools at once for a beginner
⚠️
L03 Neural net foundations
ReLUs add up to any shape; gradient descent
Derivatives, slopes, matrix multiplication are beyond Form 3 maths
⚠️
L04 NLP
Tokenisation, pretrained language models, validation sets
Fine. I can judge if two patent phrases are similar, which a Chinese-only student can't
✅
L05 From-scratch model
Titanic, loss, sigmoid
pandas covered by Python topic 12; log, sigmoid and matrices are the maths gap
⚠️
L06 Random forests
Decision trees, bagging, feature importance
Intuitive
✅
L07 Collaborative filtering
Embeddings, weight decay
Needs class (Python topic 14) and log/exp in cross-entropy
⚠️
L08 CNNs
Convolutions, pooling, dropout
The spreadsheet demo is very visual
✅
L08A Data ethics
Bias, feedback loops
Discussion lesson, fine
✅
Part 2 (L09 to L25)
Range
Rating
Why
L09 Stable Diffusion overview
⚠️
The big picture (text → noise → image) is followable from the video
L10 to L25
❌ (concepts ⚠️)
Needs calculus (chain rule), linear algebra, probability, reading research papers, and advanced Python (classes, generators, decorators). The course itself calls this graduate-level material
Verdict
I can't learn all of it, but Part 1 works well for me once I learn Python first. I have an easier time than the Chinese-only student because the course was made for English speakers, yet most of this vault's study aids are in Chinese, so I miss them.
